The Flockton Flier

In 1976, Southern Television made a children’s series (The Flockton Flyer) about a family concerned with the preservation of a disused railway in Somerset. The filming took place on the West Somerset Railway line which had been closed during the ‘Beeching’ cuts in 1963 and partly re-opened in 1973. In the film, the Watchet Royal British Legion Band were asked to play the part of a band at the opening ceremony of the line and appeared in Series One, Episode 6. The following pictures were taken from the film; some of the players are still members of the band.

Our current second horn player (who joined the band 33 years later) also appeared in the film as ‘the English Raj lady’ and can be seen in Series Two, Episode 2. She remembers the expensive, beautiful dress which she was given to wear, and which then had holes burnt in it by smuts from the engine boiler.
