Former band member Alex Holwegg was a keen supporter of the Training Band and taught many of our current players the art of brass band music. It is in his honour that we present this annual trophy for the most improved training band member.

This year, it has been awarded jointly to cornet player Alistair Harrison and trombonist Joshua Symes.

Training Band Leader, Claire Whitworth said:

"Alistair and Joshua joined the West Somerset Brass Band as learners in February 2023, Alistair with no previous experience of playing an instrument and Joshua with limited musical experience.  Since then, they have both gone from strength to strength with Joshua progressing to training band after a few months and then moving into main band in November 2023 and Alistair progressing into training band in November and in January joining main band rehearsals.  This is no mean feat, they have worked and practiced really hard and their enjoyment in playing and growing confidence is evident for everyone to see.  I was delighted to present them as winners of this year's Alex Hollwegg Trophy."

As you can see, our training and learner groups are open to everyone even if you are a complete novice. Get in touch today if this has inspired you to take up a brass instrument. And congratulations to Alistair and Josh, worthy winners.
