Dave first joined the band in 1971 and went on to play for an incredible 54 years - spending around 90% of that time as the band’s solo horn player. Holding such a demanding position for so long is no small achievement, and Dave’s skillful musicianship, reliability, and quiet leadership have been vital to the band. The tenor horn section will always consider him their spiritual leader.
Beyond his musical ability, Dave also served for many years on the committee, organising engagements, and has long been known for his humour, camaraderie, and dedication to keeping band traditions alve - including the long-standing Friday night trip to the Legion after rehearsal, a ritual he proudly started decades ago.
Band members describe Dave with the musical term “FFF”: fully committed, Fun and Friendly - the perfect summation of a player who has given so much to the band and to the local community over the years.
Dave continues to support the band and can be found rattling the collection bucket at our engagements in and around Watchet. He also continues to lead us to the Legion after Friday rehearsal, after all some traditions are too good to be neglected!
